Be Smart When it Comes to Home Projectsby the Better Business Bureau of Indianapolis The wet spring has put many of our home improvement projects on hold for warmer, dryer weather. Now, as we begin to tackle these projects, what steps should we take to ensure the process moves as smoothly as possible? Step 1: Find Trustworthy Contractors/Businesses - The BBB recommends using various avenues to find businesses that specialize in completing projects similar to yours. These avenues include using the Type of Business List at www.indybbb.org, running a Google search and reviewing direct mail advertisements, newspaper classifieds and referrals by friends and neighbors. Step 2: Get and Compare Estimates - The BBB recommends receiving an estimate from at least three businesses or contractors. Remember, the lowest estimate is not always the best. Be sure to consider time, materials to be used and the scope of the project before making a final decision. Step 3: Review Applicable Licensing - Different cities and counties may have licensing and permit requirements depending on the type of work being completed. In Marion County, for example, most all structural and roofing work requires a valid contractor’s license. Contact your local code enforcement center or city/county government for additional information. Step 4: Review Bonding and Insurance - Be sure the company is properly bonded and insured. If an accident should happen and the business is not insured, you may be held responsible for damages sustained to your property and/or damages and injuries sustained by the business and business employees. Step 5: Check Out the Business with the BBB - Visit www.bbb.org or call our office at 317-488-2222 to check out a business’s BBB Business Review. Step 6: Review the Contract - Always insist on receiving a written contract to be signed by both parties. The contract should state the total price, payment schedule, completion date, all guarantees and warranty information and any other pertinent information. Never rely on verbal promises; get everything in writing. Step 7: Sign the Contract and Authorize the Work - Always retain a copy for yourself. |
